Cleve Wood

Walk into Cleve Wood near Fairford and you're straight into proper Cotswolds woodland - the kind of place where the light filters through in shafts and you can actually hear yourself think. It's a modest forest rather than some grand estate, but that's rather the point. The paths are well-trodden and straightforward, ideal if you've got younger legs to tire out or you just want a decent two-hour ramble without map-reading.

Family groups will get the most from it. There's nothing complicated here - no zip lines or craft centres - just trees, air, and the occasional bit of wildlife if you're lucky. Walkers appreciate it as a circuit break between exploring Fairford itself and the surrounding countryside. History types won't find much in the way of structures, but the wood itself has that quiet age to it.

It's free, naturally, and you can do it in under two hours depending on pace. Early morning or late afternoon beats midday - fewer families then, better light. The ground can get muddy after rain, so boots make sense.

If you're camped at Great Farm just down the road, Cleve Wood is an easy add-on to your day. Second Chance Touring is a bit further out, but still within striking distance. Combine it with a walk into Fairford town and you've got a solid half-day sorted. Nothing fancy, but genuinely good for clearing your head.
