Clayhill Copse

A thick wedge of woodland just outside Reading, Clayhill Copse is the sort of place you'd stumble into by accident and be genuinely glad you did. The trees here are proper dense - oak, beech, and conifers packed close enough that it feels properly remote even though the town's just a few minutes away. It's a working forest, so you're not getting manicured paths and interpretive boards. What you get instead is mud, roots, and the kind of quiet that makes you remember why people bother with walks in the first place.

Walkers come here most, and rightly so - there's enough ground to cover without it feeling like a forced march. An hour or two is plenty, though if you're the type who likes to sit on a log and listen to nothing much happening, you could stretch it out. The woodland does shift through the seasons, so winter's good for seeing through the trees, spring for the light green chaos of new growth. Summer gets a bit claustrophobic when it's all leafed out.

It works well as part of a broader day if you're staying at Ravenswing Park or Wellington Country Park - both are close enough for an easy drive or bike ride. Neither of those parks oversell themselves on activities, so adding an actual wood walk to the itinerary feels like the smart move. Free entry, no facilities, no fuss. Just turn up, walk about, get your boots muddy. That's rather the point.
