Clay Mound

Clay Mound rises out of the Wiltshire countryside just a few miles from Salisbury, and it's exactly the sort of place that rewards a proper wander if you're already in the area. The walk itself is straightforward enough - nothing too taxing - and the view from the top sweeps across the downland in all directions. On a clear day you can see for miles. It's the kind of spot where you suddenly understand why people bothered living out here centuries ago.

This one's best suited to walkers and history enthusiasts rather than families with young kids, though determined toddlers won't find it impossible. The mound itself isn't dramatic - no Glastonbury Tor theatrics - but it has genuine archaeological interest and the Salisbury area is thick with Bronze Age remains, so standing up here feels connected to something older. Allow an hour to get up and back, plus time to just sit and absorb if you're in no rush.

The appeal really depends on whether you're already exploring Salisbury and the surrounding downland. As a day trip in isolation, it might feel a bit thin, but combined with a stay at Salisbury Hillside Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite just down the road, it makes for a sensible morning's outing before heading into town or tackling bigger walks. Free to visit, obviously - it's farmland and open country. Best in spring or autumn when the light's proper dramatic and you won't be fighting through midges.
