Clay Hill

Rolling heathland stretches away in every direction from this modest summit, reached by winding footpaths that snake through gorse and bracken. Clay Hill won't test serious walkers - it's more of a gentle amble than a proper climb - but the views across the New Forest make it worth the effort. You'll spot ponies grazing between the heather patches, and on clear days the coastline glimmers in the distance.

Families with older children will enjoy the walk up, though little ones might find it a bit much. The paths can get muddy after rain, so proper walking boots are essential. There's no marked summit or trig point - just a gradual rise where the trees thin out and the landscape opens up. Takes about an hour round trip from wherever you park.

From Lyndhurst, it's an easy drive to the trailheads, making this a decent morning outing if you're staying at one of the nearby campsites like Ashurst or Longbeech. Combine it with a visit to the New Forest National Park centre for a proper day out. Best tackled early morning when the light catches the heather just right and before the car parks fill up with day-trippers.
