Clara Vale Nature Reserve

The walk through Clara Vale Nature Reserve hits you straight away with how green and quiet it is - a proper escape from the main road that runs past Stocksfield. It's not a sprawling woodland, more a compact riverside reserve where the Tyne winds through and you get good sightings of birds and the occasional roe deer if you're lucky and keep still.

You're looking at a decent circular walk, maybe an hour or so depending on pace, with paths that aren't too punishing though they can get muddy. It's the sort of place that rewards getting up early - the light comes through the trees nicely and you're more likely to spot wildlife before the day gets busy. Families with kids who like spotting birds will get something out of it, though it's not exactly teeming with dramatic sights. It's more about the walk itself and being beside the water than arriving at some big payoff.

The reserve works well as a half-morning outing if you're based at Valley View Camping & Glamping just down the road - close enough that you won't waste half the day getting there. There's something genuinely restorative about it, nothing fancy, just a bit of woodland and river that's been left to get on with things. Worth building into a morning, but don't expect the kind of nature spectacle that dominates Instagram. This is the real thing - quiet, low-key, and all the better for it.
