Clara Vale Local Nature Reserve

The reserve sits quietly along a wooded stretch just outside Stocksfield, and it's the sort of place that rewards a slow walk rather than a quick look-around. Clara Vale is proper woodland - the kind where you'll actually hear birdsong instead of traffic, with streams running through and enough space to lose the crowds entirely.

It's ideal for walkers and nature enthusiasts who want something low-key. The terrain is manageable without being dull - there are paths that meander through the trees and alongside water, and if you're into spotting wildlife, bring binoculars and patience. Families won't get restless here if they're the outdoor type; younger kids might lose interest after an hour or so, but anyone who enjoys a proper woodland ramble will find it worth the detour.

There's no entrance fee that I'm aware of, and the beauty of a local nature reserve is precisely that - it feels local, unmaintained in the best sense, not packaged up for tourists. Go early morning if you want to see anything, and bring proper footwear because the ground gets muddy quickly after rain.
