Claife Heights

Views across Windermere don't get much better than this, though you'll work for them. The climb up from Near Sawrey takes about 45 minutes through woodland that's lovely in spring but can be proper muddy after rain. Once you reach the top, the whole of England's largest natural lake spreads out below - Bowness looking like a toy town in the distance.

Walkers will love the challenge, though families with young children might find the ascent a bit much. The path isn't particularly well marked in places, so decent walking boots and a map are essential. Worth noting there's no cafe at the summit - just spectacular views and the satisfaction of earning them.

Timing matters here. Early morning gives you the best light for photos, plus you'll avoid the crowds that can gather later in the day. The walk down is easier on the legs but harder on the knees, especially if the path's wet.

Perfect for extending a Lake District break, particularly if you're staying at one of the nearby parks like Fallbarrow or White Cross Bay. Both are within easy driving distance, making this a cracking day out for anyone wanting to see Windermere from above rather than on it. Just don't expect facilities - bring water and snacks.
