Ciderhouse Wood

The forest floor here is thick with leaf litter and moss - proper spongy underfoot after rain. Ciderhouse Wood sits just outside Caersws in Powys, a decent-sized woodland block that's ideal if you want to stretch your legs without committing to a full day's hiking. The trees are mixed hardwood, nothing rare or spectacular, but the paths wind through nicely and there's genuine peace once you're ten minutes in.

Walkers will get the most from this. The terrain is gentle enough for families with older kids, though pushchairs would struggle after the first few hundred metres. You're looking at an hour to ninety minutes for a proper circuit if you meander. There's no café, no facilities that I could find, so bring a flask if the weather's decent.

What works about Ciderhouse Wood is the sheer ordinariness of it. You won't queue, you won't see Instagram crowds, and your kids won't demand to leave after twenty minutes. It's the kind of place you'd actually return to on a quiet morning, not somewhere ticked off a list. The wood connects well with a Mid Wales park holiday - Maesmawr Farm Resort is within striking distance, as are Love2Stay and Gellidywyll further afield. Use it as a morning's walk, then head into Caersws for lunch. It's free, accessible, and honest. That's plenty.
