The Church of St Mary the Virgin sits just outside Bridgwater, a solid medieval structure that rewards anyone willing to step inside. This is proper Somerset church territory - all stone arches and worn flagstones, the kind of place where you can actually feel the weight of centuries without any of the visitor-attraction faffing about.

What strikes you first is the scale of it. This isn't a tiny rural chapel but a proper parish church with real architectural presence. The interior has that peaceful, slightly cool quality that old buildings do, with enough detail to keep you occupied for twenty minutes or so - carved misericords, decent windows, the usual ecclesiastical features that remind you why people bothered building these things so well in the first place.

It's genuinely free to wander in, and there's no time pressure whatsoever. History enthusiasts will appreciate the medieval bones of the place, while anyone after a moment of quiet away from the caravan will find it suitably calming. Not one for children after about ten minutes unless they're genuinely into old churches, but for a peaceful half-hour it's hard to beat.

If you're staying at Thornhills Holiday Park or The Hideout just down the road, it's an easy leg-stretch walk or short drive. Worth combining with a proper look round Bridgwater itself - the town has more going on than people expect. Allow half an hour here, longer if you're the type to read every plaque.
