Church of St. Andrew

The Church of St. Andrew sits quietly on the edge of Hailsham, a proper medieval survivor that most people drive past without a second glance. It's worth stopping for though, especially if you're staying at one of the nearby holiday parks and fancy a proper walk into town.

What you get is a church with real bones - flint and stone work that speaks to centuries of worship, from its Norman origins right through to Victorian restoration. Inside, there's decent medieval tilework and the kind of peaceful atmosphere you only find in working parish churches that haven't been turned into heritage experiences. The churchyard offers a bit of breathing space too, though it's no major attraction on its own.

History enthusiasts and anyone interested in English church architecture will find it worthwhile. It's also decent for a quiet moment if you're based at Three Ponds or Warren Wood and need a break from the holiday park routine. Kids probably won't linger long unless they're properly into medieval churches, which is fair enough.

The walk from Hailsham town centre takes maybe fifteen minutes, making it an easy morning outing before heading back to the parks. No entry fees that I'm aware of, though it's worth checking locally for opening times as smaller churches can be temperamental about access. On balance, if you're in the area it's well worth the detour - not spectacular, but genuinely interesting and free from the usual tourist infrastructure.
