Church of St Andrew, Blagdon

The Church of St Andrew sits in the village of Blagdon, just outside Winscombe, and it's one of those places that rewards a quiet wander if you're passing through Somerset. The building itself is medieval - proper solid stonework with a tower you can spot from a distance - and the churchyard has that peaceful, slightly overgrown feel that makes you want to slow down.

Inside, there's genuine character: old monuments, decent stained glass, and the sort of atmosphere that works whether you're into ecclesiastical architecture or just after somewhere calm to sit for ten minutes. It's not a major draw on its own - you won't need more than twenty or thirty minutes unless you're really keen on brass rubbings and tomb inscriptions.

What makes it worth stopping for is the setting. Blagdon's a proper village, not a destination in itself, but if you're camping nearby - and there are several sites within a few miles, including Cheddar Woods Resort and Mendip Basecamp just up the road - it's an easy detour. Combine it with a walk around the village or a push over to Winscombe and you've got a decent morning sorted.

Access appears to be free and unrestricted, though you'll want to check locally for any specific opening times. Families with older kids might enjoy it; very young children will probably find it dull after the first five minutes. History types and architecture buffs will get more mileage from it.
