Christ the King

The Cathedral of Christ the King rises from Newry's centre like a statement of intent - all soaring limestone and determined verticality. Built in the 1820s, it's one of Ireland's finest neoclassical Catholic churches, and stepping inside genuinely stops you in your tracks. The interior is vast and luminous, with a coffered ceiling that draws your eye upward and stained glass that catches light beautifully on a clear day.

It's mainly a working parish church rather than a tourist attraction, so don't expect guided tours or visitor facilities. What you get instead is the real thing - a place where people actually worship, which somehow makes it more compelling than something roped off for sightseers. The architecture alone justifies a visit if you're into 19th-century ecclesiastical design. History types will appreciate the layers: pre-Emancipation ambitions, Victorian craftsmanship, and the sheer scale of the building statement in a town where Catholics had been excluded from public life not long before.

Newcastle's only a short drive south if you're basing yourself at Slieve Croob Camping, which makes this a logical half-hour stop while exploring the Mourne area. The mountains are the real draw there, but Christ the King offers a moment of calm reflection before heading into the hills. Allow 20 minutes inside if you're genuinely interested in the architecture; five if you're just passing through. Best visited mid-week when it's quieter.
