Christ Church, Purley

The Victorian Gothic Revival church sitting on Purley's main road is impossible to miss, all red brick and pointed windows the way the Victorians loved them. Christ Church commands attention without being showy - it's genuinely impressive architecture from the 1860s, built when Purley was still becoming itself.

Inside, the space opens up nicely. High ceilings, proper stained glass, that particular smell of old wood and stone that gets under your skin. The craftsmanship from the period shows everywhere you look. It's the sort of place where you could easily spend half an hour just taking it in, especially if the light's hitting those windows right.

This works best if you're already in Redhill nearby and fancy a cultural breather between outdoor bits. History types will appreciate the Victorian detail and anyone wanting a quiet moment away from the campsite will find it. The churchyard's worth a wander too - genuinely peaceful.

If you're based at Alderstead Heath or Milberry Green Meadows, it's close enough for a stop on your way through rather than a dedicated trip. Worth the detour if you're interested in Victorian Surrey architecture, less compelling if you're purely after outdoor action. The opening hours and admission policy aren't always predictable with smaller churches, so do ring ahead or catch a service time.
