Chûn Quoit

You'll find yourself standing in front of a rather striking Bronze Age tomb on the moorland between Penzance and Morvah - four upright stones supporting a massive capstone, all of it tilted at a jaunty angle that makes you wonder how it's still standing. Chûn Quoit is what archaeologists call a dolmen, basically a chambered burial mound from around 3000 BC, though the earth has long since eroded away, leaving just this skeletal stone structure. It's genuinely eerie in the right light, and the moorland location means you get proper views across West Cornwall.

Walkers absolutely get the most from this one. There's no visitor centre, no café, no interpretation boards - just you, the stones, and a lot of windswept grass. Allow ten minutes to half an hour depending on how much you want to wander the surrounding area and soak it in. The site is free, and you can visit whenever - it's out in the open on common land.

Kids might find it underwhelming if you're expecting Stonehenge drama, but history-minded families and anyone interested in prehistoric Cornwall will find it genuinely worthwhile. The walk itself is the appeal - you're out on the moors, breathing in the Atlantic wind, not fighting crowds at a ticket office.
