Chippenham Playing Fields

The fields around Chippenham in Herefordshire feel properly rural - you're looking at open grassland that's managed as a nature reserve, just a few miles outside Coleford. It's the sort of place where you'll spot common birds, possibly butterflies depending on the season, and get a genuine sense of what the Forest of Dean borderlands look like when they're not rammed with tourists.

This isn't a ticketed attraction with a visitor centre. You're there to walk, observe, maybe sit for a bit and watch the wildlife go about its business. Birdwatchers will find it worthwhile, particularly in spring and early summer. Families with young kids might manage half an hour before restlessness sets in - there's not much here in terms of facilities or structured activity. Serious walkers, though, could easily incorporate it into a longer ramble through the area.

The reserve works brilliantly as a quiet break between the busier parts of the Dean. It's only a short drive from the highly-rated Doward Park Campsite and Bracelands Campsite, both sitting at 5-star reviews. Pop over from either of those bases for an hour of proper countryside without the visitor infrastructure. Coming in spring gives you the best chance of seeing nesting birds and wildflowers. No admission fee, no car park to speak of - just pull over sensibly and explore on foot. It's genuinely free, genuinely peaceful, and genuinely good if you want space rather than spectacle.
