Chetney Hill

The highest point in the Isle of Sheppey sounds more dramatic than it actually is. Chetney Hill sits at just 43 metres above sea level, which tells you everything about the landscape you're working with here - flat, windswept, and determinedly unglamorous. That said, there's something oddly satisfying about climbing to the top and realising you can see across the marshes towards the Thames estuary, with the industrial sprawl of Sheerness behind you and the water glinting in the distance.

It's a quick walk rather than a proper hike, so families won't struggle, though there's little to keep small children entertained once you've reached the summit. History types might find the spot mildly interesting - the hill has views across the old naval dockyard area - but you're looking at twenty minutes maximum, not an afternoon activity.

The real appeal is as a leg-stretch between other things. If you're staying at Sheerness Holiday Park or Haven Kent Coast Holiday Park, it's worth the detour on a decent day, though wind is almost guaranteed. Go when the light's good - early morning or late afternoon - because the views across the marshes actually improve considerably with the right angle of sun.

Free to visit, and there's rarely anyone else up there, which means if you're after a bit of peace and quiet away from the holiday parks, this delivers that at least. Just don't expect Kent's most thrilling vista.
