Chestfield Golf Club

Just outside Whitstable, Chestfield Golf Club is a proper links-style course that's been going since 1910. You're looking at eighteen holes across 6,200 yards of fairly challenging terrain - nothing fancy, but the sort of place where golfers actually want to spend their day. The course winds through open Kent countryside with enough elevation change to keep things interesting without becoming ridiculous.

It's strictly for golfers, obviously. If you're staying at Seaview Holiday Park down the road or Muswell Manor further afield, and someone in your group plays, this is worth investigating. Green fees vary seasonally and you'll need to check their website or ring ahead - it's members-focused but visitors are welcome. Allow four to four and a half hours for a full round.

The real appeal here is that it's genuinely old-school. No pretension, no corporate nonsense. The greens are tight, the rough punishes you when it should, and there's proper banter among the members. Spring and autumn are your best bets for conditions - summer gets dry and a bit firm for some tastes, winter's waterlogged. It won't suit casual golfers or kids mucking about, but for anyone who actually plays the game, it's a solid eighteen holes with character. The fact it's been here over a century says something. Worth the detour if golf's your thing.
