Chesterton Wood

The woodland around Chesterton, just outside Leamington Spa, is the sort of place you stumble upon rather than plan for - which is precisely why it works. Ancient oak and beech stand proper tall here, their branches creating that thick canopy that makes you forget you're five minutes from the ring road. The walking is straightforward: well-trodden paths crisscross the wood, ranging from leisurely loops that take twenty minutes to longer routes if you fancy stretching your legs for an hour or two. You'll see bluebells in spring, which draws the crowds, but come in autumn and you've basically got the place to yourself among the leaf litter.

This is walker territory, really. History buffs might appreciate that you're in old Warwickshire woodland - proper ancient stuff - but there's no visitor centre or interpretation boards, so don't expect a structured experience. Kids will find it fine for a morning out; they can burn energy on the paths and scramble about, though it's not a destination playground sort of place. The ground gets boggy after rain, so choose your footwear accordingly.

Admission is free and there's no formal opening hours - you access it as you would any country walk. If you're camping at Harbury Fields Farm just up the road, this becomes a proper asset: a decent walk without driving. For a week-long park holiday in Warwickshire, pair it with other attractions in Leamington itself rather than expecting the wood alone to fill a day. It's more of a solid half-morning addition to your plans than a headline draw.
