Chat Tor

Chat Tor rises 1,175 metres above the southern edge of Okehampton, a proper moorland summit that rewards the climb with views stretching across Dartmoor. The rocky outcrop at the top isn't dramatic - you won't find sheer cliffs or anything theatrical - but on a clear day you can see right across to the Tavy Valley. The walk up takes about an hour from the car park depending on your pace and how much you stop to catch your breath.

This one works best for serious walkers rather than casual strollers. The terrain is exposed moorland, so wind and weather change fast. I'd only recommend it to families if the kids are genuinely keen hikers - the payoff is views rather than adventure, and younger ones might find it a bit of a slog for what amounts to open moorland at the top.

If you're based at Lydford Caravan & Camping Park, Chat Tor makes an excellent morning outing that won't eat your whole day. The site sits just 2.7 miles away, so there's no faff getting there. The walk itself is free, and you can access it from various points on the moor. Go early in the day if you want decent light for photographs - afternoon cloud rolling in from the west is common, even in summer.

The surrounding moorland is perfect for extending your walk once you've bagged the summit. Bring proper boots and waterproofs. Phone signal can be dodgy up top.
