Chasewater

The water stretches out surprisingly wide for somewhere so close to Rugeley - you'd almost forget you're in the Midlands. Chasewater is a proper working reservoir that's been there since Victorian times, and it's evolved into one of those places where locals actually spend their weekends rather than just passing through.

The lake itself is the main draw. Walking the perimeter takes a good couple of hours if you're not rushing, and the path is well-maintained enough for families with kids, though it can get muddy after rain. There's a decent sandy beach area at the northern end, which fills up on summer weekends with paddleboarders and swimmers who don't mind the cold. If you're into sailing or watersports, the sailing club based here means you'll see proper activity on the water most days.

It's free to visit, which is the main thing going for it. Bring a packed lunch and you've got an afternoon sorted. Birdwatchers come here regularly - the reservoir attracts migrating species, particularly in spring and autumn, so binoculars are worthwhile. The visitor center has some information if it's open when you arrive, though facilities are fairly basic.

Stay at Cannock Chase Camping & Caravanning Club Site just 4 miles away and you've got easy access without the faff of driving. It's ideal if you want a quiet spot with a bit of water activity attached, though don't expect drama or Instagram moments. This is honest, straightforward Staffordshire - good for a couple of hours' walk, genuinely pleasant for families, and a proper break from the car.
