Charltonbrook Reservoir

The water stretches out flat and grey-blue under the South Yorkshire sky, ringed by scrubland and the occasional tree. There's no visitor centre or cafe - come prepared with a flask and snacks. The car parking situation is fine but basic. It's free to access and there's no stated opening hours, meaning you can essentially visit whenever daylight allows.

If you're staying at Greensprings Caravan Park just down the road, this makes an easy add-on to a morning or afternoon. It won't eat up hours of your time, but it's a proper bit of nature that breaks up a park-based holiday nicely. Don't expect crowds or facilities. That's rather the point.
