Charley Knoll

The walk up Charley Knoll rewards you with one of the better viewpoints across Leicestershire, even if the peak itself is modest by most standards. You're looking at around 300 metres of elevation - nothing that'll break a sweat, but enough to separate this from a flat stroll through the Charnwood area.

The summit gives decent views across the county on a clear day. It's the sort of place where you genuinely appreciate the landscape rather than stand around thinking you've wasted the effort. Walkers will find it a sensible half-hour detour if they're already exploring the Charnwood Forest vicinity, which is the real draw to this corner of Leicestershire. On a misty day, frankly, you could skip it and not miss much.

It works best as part of a longer walk rather than a standalone trip. If you're staying at Meadow Farm Marina or Charnwood Acres Caravan Park, both within five miles, you could easily incorporate Charley Knoll into a morning circuit. The nearby villages and the broader Charnwood Forest give you far more to engage with - this is the bonus rather than the main event.

No facilities on the knoll itself, so bring water if you're making a proper day of it. Best visited when the ground isn't waterlogged. Spring and early autumn are ideal. Don't expect crowds. Don't expect a cafe. Do expect a straightforward hill with a worthwhile view and the satisfaction of having actually earned a vista rather than driven to a car park.
