National Trust - Stoneywell

A cramped Arts and Crafts cottage built into a Leicestershire hillside, Stoneywell is the sort of place that makes you duck your head through doorways and wonder how anyone ever cooked a proper meal in that kitchen. The National Trust property dates from 1896 and feels less like a showpiece manor and more like someone's actual home - which is rather the point.

Inside, the rooms tumble downhill following the slope of the land. There's no grand staircase or sweeping halls; instead you're navigating narrow passages, popping up into unexpected chambers, climbing down to find a sitting room tucked half-underground. The Arts and Crafts philosophy runs through it all - hand-made tiles, bespoke joinery, built-in furniture that still functions. It's intimate and a bit mad, honestly.

Historically minded visitors will find plenty to chew on, particularly those interested in early 20th-century domestic design. Families with younger kids might find it feels small and slightly claustrophobic after half an hour, though the grounds outside offer some breathing room. The cottage rewards a slower wander rather than a quick tick-off.

From Leicester, it's an easy drive out toward Bradgate Park - which at 2.7 miles away offers rambling space once you've finished here. Charnwood Acres is similarly close if you're basing yourself in a caravan.
