Chard Arm Junction

The Somerset Levels hide their secrets well, and Chard Arm Junction is one you'll only find if you're genuinely interested in Roman Britain. This is where two Roman waterways converged - the Fosse Way branch and the Chard Arm itself - creating what was once a thriving inland port around 70-100 AD. There's no visitor centre, no cafe, no information boards. What you get instead is the satisfaction of standing where traders once unloaded amphorae and samian ware onto low-lying marshland.

It's proper archaeology for the enthusiast, not a day-trip spectacle. The site itself is flat and unassuming - the landscape has changed dramatically since Roman times, and what was navigable waterway is now drainage ditch and fields. You won't see Roman structures; you'll mostly see the lie of the land and imagine the settlement that thrived here. Photography types and history buffs who've done their homework will find it rewarding. Families with young children expecting something tangible might leave disappointed.

Taunton sits just five miles south, making this a reasonable detour if you're exploring the region's Roman heritage. The caravan parks nearby - Ashe Farm and Cornish Farm are both close - make decent bases for a longer stay on the Levels. Allow an hour if you're stopping by; bring an Ordnance Survey map because signage is minimal. Visit on a dry day; the Levels can be boggy. It's niche, underdeveloped as a visitor attraction, but genuinely interesting if you know what you're looking at.
