Chapman Gallery

Just outside St Albans, Chapman Gallery sits quietly without the fuss you'd expect from a proper art space. It's a working gallery that takes itself seriously - exhibitions rotate regularly, and the staff actually know what they're talking about rather than just standing around looking important.

You'll find contemporary work here, usually a mix of painting, sculpture, and installation pieces. The space itself is modest but well-lit, the kind of place where you can spend twenty minutes or two hours depending on what's on. No crowds jostling for position in front of the big names - just genuine art lovers and the occasional person who wandered in by chance.

Walkers heading through the area might easily miss it, which is probably fine - this isn't the sort of gallery that needs footfall. If you're staying at Cherry Green Trees or any of the nearby caravan parks within a few miles, it's worth checking what's showing before you visit. You could easily combine it with a wander around St Albans proper, which has plenty more to see.

I'd ring ahead or check their website before heading out - opening hours can be a bit variable. Free admission would be lovely, but I'd budget a couple of quid entry fee just in case. Allow an hour maximum unless you're really into whatever exhibition is up.
