Chapelhill Rough

Ancient woodland doesn't get much more authentic than this patch of Worcestershire countryside. Chapelhill Rough sprawls across gentle slopes just outside Malvern, a proper old-growth forest where oak and ash trees have been doing their thing for centuries. The paths wind through dense canopy that blocks out most of the light even on bright days, creating that cathedral-like atmosphere you only get in mature woodland.

Walkers will love the network of footpaths that criss-cross the site, though don't expect anything too challenging - the terrain is fairly forgiving. Families with younger children might find it a bit muddy after rain, and there's not much in the way of obvious attractions to keep restless kids entertained. This is more about quiet contemplation than adventure playgrounds.

Birdwatchers have the best time here. The thick cover attracts woodpeckers, nuthatches and a decent variety of smaller songbirds, especially early morning or late afternoon. Spring brings bluebells and wild garlic carpeting the forest floor, though the display isn't quite as spectacular as some of the more famous Worcestershire woods.
