Chapel Wood

Walk into Chapel Wood and you're immediately swallowed by proper woodland - the kind where you can actually hear yourself think. It's a forest just outside Maidstone that delivers everything a decent Kent woodland should: tall trees, forest floor that softens your footsteps, and enough quiet to make you forget the A20 exists somewhere beyond the treeline.

What you're doing here is straightforward. There are paths threading through, nothing too demanding, and you can spend anywhere from forty minutes to two hours depending on how lost you want to get. The trees do most of the work - no manicured attractions, no visitor centre, just woodland as it should be. Walkers will find it a genuine breath of fresh air, and families with kids old enough to manage uneven ground won't struggle either. Bring proper shoes though; it gets boggy in places.

Free to access and no set hours means you can turn up whenever. Early morning is particularly good if you're after some peace. It's the sort of place that slots nicely into a broader Kent outing - combine it with time at Chegworth Mill Glamping or Painters Farm Camping Site nearby, and you've got a proper woodland day without needing to chase tourist attractions all over the county.

Not dramatic, not Instagram-worthy, but genuinely restorative. That's the entire point.
