Chapel Down

Chapel Down is a working winery tucked into the Kent countryside near Ashford, and yes, England actually produces decent wine these days. The vineyard sits on a south-facing slope where they grow classic varieties - mainly Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Bacchus - and you can taste what they've made right there on the premises.

The actual experience depends what you're after. If you want to wander round production areas and learn how English sparkling wine gets made, that's possible. If you'd rather just sit down with a glass and a cheese board, they do that too. The views across the Weald are proper lovely, especially on a clear afternoon. It's not a massive tourist operation - you won't find the crowds you'd get at some of the bigger attractions nearby.

Wine enthusiasts and anyone curious about English viticulture will find it worthwhile. Families with older kids work fine too, though younger ones might find it a bit dull after half an hour unless they're into grapes. Allow a couple of hours if you're doing a tasting and lunch.

It works well as part of a wider Kent tour.
