Chailey Common Local Nature Reserve

You'll find yourself on open heathland that feels genuinely wild for Sussex - gorse and bracken stretching out, with the kind of horizon you don't expect so close to Haywards Heath. Chailey Common is exactly what it says: a proper nature reserve, not manicured or fussy, just heath doing what it does.

It's ideal for walkers who want something uncomplicated. The paths are straightforward, though you're on open ground so weather matters - wind whips across here, and winter mud is real. You can knock out a decent walk in an hour or two, or potter about spotting birds and insects if that's your thing. Families with older kids will manage fine; younger ones might find it a bit samey after thirty minutes unless you're really into nature spotting.

The reserve is free to access and there's no visitor centre nonsense - just land. Bring proper boots if it's been wet. Summer is lovely for a ramble; spring sees a good showing of wildflowers if you're lucky.

It works well as a morning outing if you're staying at The Secret Campsite or Wild Boar Wood - both are within easy driving distance. You could combine it with a walk into Haywards Heath town itself for lunch, though honestly the attraction here is the open space rather than any facilities. Worth doing once if you're in the area and want proper Sussex heath rather than another managed country park. It's real, it's quiet, and it doesn't pretend to be anything else.
