Bluebell Railway - (Sheffield Park, Station)

The smell of coal smoke and hot metal hits you before you even board. The Bluebell Railway's Sheffield Park station is proper nostalgia in motion - a working Victorian railway line that actually runs steam trains through the Sussex countryside, not some static museum piece gathering dust.

You'll spend a good couple of hours here if you do the full ticket: board at Sheffield Park, rattle through woodland and fields to Kingscote station and back. The trains themselves are genuinely beautiful - lovingly restored Pullman carriages and vintage engines that clank and hiss like they mean it. Kids absolutely love it, especially if they can bag a seat by the window, though the soot does settle on your coat.

It's free to wander the station itself if you fancy a look around, but the actual train ride costs a fair bit - check their website for current prices. Allow at least half a day if you're riding the rails, longer if you want to explore the museum or grab food at the station cafe.

The line runs year-round on weekends and school holidays, with more frequent services during summer. Haywards Heath is your nearest proper town, just a few miles north.

If you're camping at Wild Boar Wood or The Secret Campsite nearby, this is a cracking rainy-day option that doesn't feel forced. It's old-fashioned transport done genuinely well, without the theme-park gimmicks. Whether it's worth the detour depends on how much you love heritage railways - serious enthusiasts will spend half a day here. Everyone else? One good ride and you're done.
