Chafer Wood

Walk into Chafer Wood and you're immediately struck by how quiet it is. Just a short drive from Pickering, this woodland offers proper solitude - the sort of place where you can actually hear birdsong without traffic noise creeping in. The wood itself is a mix of mature trees and younger growth, with paths that wind through without fuss. It's not dramatic or showy, but that's rather the point.

This is a walker's spot, plain and simple. The terrain is gentle enough for families with older children, though you'll want proper boots after rain - the ground gets soft and boggy in patches. An hour's wander does it, maybe ninety minutes if you're the type to stop and identify mushrooms or just stand about admiring the light through the canopy. There's no visitor centre, no café, no fanfare. Just wood and peace.

If you're staying at Vale of Pickering Caravan Park or Lahtle Wood Glamping, it makes an easy morning outing before heading to the North York Moors Railway or exploring Pickering itself. The nearby Wolds Walk Glamping is also close enough that you could reasonably visit. It won't occupy a full day, but that's not what it's for. Chafer Wood works best as part of a broader circuit - pair it with other local walks and you've got something worthwhile. Worth the detour if you're in the area and fancy a break from the busier honeypots.
