Cerrig Heilyn

The walk up Cerrig Heilyn from near Rhyl isn't what you'd call dramatic, but there's something quietly satisfying about it. This modest peak sits in the foothills south of Conwy, and once you've scrambled to the top, the views across North Wales open up properly - Snowdonia to the west, the coast ribboning away eastwards. On a clear day it's genuinely worth the effort.

It's a walker's hill rather than a family day out, though teenagers with decent boots won't struggle. The ascent takes around an hour from the nearest parking, and the terrain is rocky in patches but nothing technical. You'll share the hill with locals, which speaks volumes about how reliable it is as a half-day outing.

What makes it work for a park holiday is location. If you're staying at Golden Sands Holiday Park or Parkdean Resorts Ty Mawr, both just a few miles away, Cerrig Heilyn gives you proper fresh air and hill views without needing to drive to Snowdonia itself. It's the kind of walk that fills an afternoon between the beach and tea, not something that demands a full day's planning.

Bring water and decent footwear - the ground gets boggy after rain. There's no café at the summit, so pack snacks if you want to sit and take in the view. Free access, naturally. Go when the cloud's lifted; on a grey day it's just bracken and mist.
