Centenary Green

The water meadows around Centenary Green feel properly wild for Norfolk - wide open, quiet, and full of life if you know where to look. It's a nature reserve that doesn't announce itself much, which is half its appeal. You'll find marshland, open water, and the sort of bird-watching territory that gets twitchers excited without being intimidating for casual visitors.

The walking here is straightforward rather than dramatic. There are paths through the reserve, decent for families with older kids, though toddlers might find the openness a bit featureless. Binoculars matter more than boots. Winter and spring are when it really sings - migratory birds, water birds, the whole lot. Summer can feel a touch quieter and muggier. It's free to access, which helps.

Wisbech sits just west of here, so you're in proper fen country. What makes Centenary Green work for a park holiday is location. Glamping with Llamas in Norfolk/Cambs is barely a couple of miles away - perfectly positioned if you want reserve visits mixed with something a bit softer. Westerby Farm is another option, just over four miles off, also excellent. Both let you base yourself comfortably and do morning walks here without fuss.

Realistic verdict: not a day-long destination. Budget an hour or two, bring binoculars if you're interested in birds, and treat it as part of a wider Norfolk wetland experience rather than a standalone reason to visit. It's good for what it is - a proper piece of working landscape, not a manicured nature park.
