Cefn Brith Uchaf

The walk up to Cefn Brith Uchaf isn't particularly steep, which is probably why so many people tackle it without proper kit. The summit sits at 1,968 feet and on a clear day you can see right across the Powys moorland - proper panoramic stuff. Coming from Welshpool direction, it's a straightforward approach across open moorland, no scrambling required, though the wind can be relentless up there.

You're looking at around an hour and a half round trip depending on your pace and where you've started from. Families with older kids will manage it fine, though there's nothing here to break up the walk once you're committed - no cafes, no facilities, just the moor. The views justify it though. On a decent day, you get that sense of real isolation that Welsh hills do so well.

If you're basing yourself at Pandy Camping just a few miles away near Welshpool, this makes an excellent half-day outing. It's the sort of peak that doesn't require serious preparation but rewards the effort nonetheless. Go early if you can - the light's better and you'll likely have the top to yourself. Winter mornings can be absolutely stunning up here when the valley below is still in mist.

Free to access, naturally. Bring water though and proper footwear - the ground gets boggy in places and the wind likes to catch you off guard.
