Cauldron Hill

The climb up Cauldron Hill from Helensburgh takes about forty minutes if you're reasonably fit, and the effort pays off with proper views across the Firth of Clyde. It's not a dramatic peak - more of a rounded bump at 884 metres - but the walk itself is straightforward enough for families who don't mind a steady gradient.

What you get up top is panoramic rather than spectacular. On a clear day you can see across to Bute and the Cowal Peninsula, with the Clyde estuary spread out below. The hill sits on the outskirts of Helensburgh, so it's an easy half-day outing if you're based at one of the nearby parks like Hunters Quay or Rosneath Castle.

It's worth doing if you're already in the area and want to stretch your legs without committing to a full day's hiking. Walkers will find it decent exercise; families with younger kids might find the return journey a bit dull since there's not much to break up the descent. The summit itself is unremarkable - no café, no shelter to speak of - so bring layers and water.

Go on a weekday morning if possible. The hill gets busy on weekends with locals doing their weekend workout, and the views disappear entirely if cloud rolls in off the water, which happens often enough that you shouldn't plan your day around the weather forecast alone.
