Cathill Wood

The woodland around Cathill Wood, just outside Dorking, delivers proper old-growth forest without the tourist crush you'd get at the big Surrey attractions. Ancient oaks and beeches create a cathedral-like canopy, and the paths are manageable rather than punishing - no scrambling required unless you want it.

Walkers will get the most from this one. You're looking at a couple of hours minimum to do it justice, longer if you stop to listen to the wood properly. The forest floor is soft underfoot, which is lovely in dry weather and absolutely treacherous after rain. Bring boots either way. Children under eight might find it a bit samey after the first twenty minutes, but older kids who like climbing and exploring will have the run of the place.

There's no visitor centre or facilities that I'm aware of, so come prepared. The nearest town is Dorking if you need supplies beforehand. If you're camping at one of the nearby sites - Sands Farm Weekend Camping or Riverside Farm are the closest options, both within five miles - this makes a solid morning outing before heading to a bigger park attraction in the afternoon.

The honest assessment: it's not a destination in itself. But if you're based nearby and want to stretch your legs without driving, Cathill Wood does exactly what it says. The peace is genuine, the air's clean, and you won't be fighting for space on the paths. Go when it's not raining.
