Caterham Museum

The converted Victorian house on Harestone Valley Road holds more local Surrey history than you'd expect from a modest two-storey building. Caterham Museum is a proper volunteer-run operation - the kind where someone's spent years collecting railway artefacts, old photographs, and domestic items that actually tell you something about how people lived here over the past century and a half.

Inside, you'll find displays covering the town's railway heritage (Caterham has had a station since 1856), local geology, and domestic life through the ages. It's not vast - you can work through it in forty minutes to an hour - but it rewards poking about. The volunteers usually have time for a chat if you ask questions, which beats the corporate museum experience hands down.

Families with younger children might find it a bit text-heavy unless they're already interested in local history or railways. Older kids and adults get more out of it, particularly if you're into how ordinary towns developed. It's absolutely free, and Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday mornings are your windows - arrive early on Saturdays if you want parking space near the high street.

Perfectly manageable as a half-hour stop when based at Alderstead Heath Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite or Milberry Green Meadows, both within easy reach of Redhill town centre. Won't dominate your day but worth the detour if you're staying locally and fancy understanding Caterham beyond the surface.
