Castlestead

The Romans left their mark all over Yorkshire, but Castlestead is one of those sites that actually rewards a proper visit rather than just a quick glance. It's a fort - or what's left of one - perched near Harrogate, and walking the grounds you can still make out the earthworks where the garrison once stood guard. The layout becomes clearer once you know what you're looking at: those raised banks mark the fort walls, the depressions show where buildings stood nearly two thousand years ago.

This is squarely for history enthusiasts rather than casual strollers. You won't find a gift shop or tea room, and it's the kind of place where a good guidebook or some advance research transforms what might otherwise be a confusing walk into something genuinely absorbing. Bring an ordnance survey map and some curiosity. Kids will either find it brilliant or dreadfully dull depending on whether they're into reconstructing Roman life in their heads.

The site sits well within reach of Breaks Fold Farm Glamping & Camping, just four or five miles away, making it a sensible morning expedition if you're based there for a Yorkshire break. Summer's the obvious choice - the ground's less boggy and the light's better for picking out the earthworks. Allow an hour to wander and absorb, longer if you're genuinely keen. Free to visit, no facilities on site. Bring sturdy shoes and expect a muddy walk if there's been recent rain.
