Castlehill Reservoir

The walk around Castlehill Reservoir, just outside Perth, is one of those proper Scottish outings that rewards you for bothering to find it. Water, hills, and hardly another soul - that's what you get here. The reservoir itself sits in a quiet corner of Fife & Tayside, surrounded by rough moorland that changes character with the seasons. In autumn the bracken turns copper. In spring it's bleak but bracing.

You're looking at a straightforward circular walk, maybe 45 minutes to an hour depending on pace and how many times you stop to take photos. The path is well-trodden but not manicured - muddy patches are part of the charm. Families with older kids will manage fine. Younger ones might flag on the way back if the wind's up. This isn't a destination where you'll spend hours; it's a walk where you go, breathe, and then head into Perth for a coffee.

There's no visitor centre or facilities that I'm aware of, so bring what you need. Free access as far as I can tell, though always worth ringing ahead. The real appeal lies in its simplicity. If you're staying at one of the nearby glamping spots - Fossoway Cabins or Greenhill Farm are within a few miles - it's an excellent way to stretch your legs without driving far. On a clear day you get views across the valley. On a grey one it's moody and atmospheric. Both have their merits. Worth the detour if you're in the area and like walking. Not worth planning a trip around, mind you.
