Castlehaw (Motte & Bailey)

A grassy mound rises from the Cumbrian landscape just outside Kendal, and that's Castlehaw - the earthworks of a Norman motte and bailey castle that's been quietly sitting here for nearly a thousand years. There's not much left in the traditional sense. No ruins, no stonework, just the distinctive bumps and banks that tell you exactly where the Norman lord once planted his wooden fortress in the 11th century. You can walk right up to it, and there's something rather satisfying about standing on that raised motte and imagining the wooden palisade that once crowned it.

This is proper archaeology rather than a day-long attraction. Most people spend thirty minutes to an hour here, tracing the earthworks and trying to picture the bailey beyond. History enthusiasts will get more from it than casual visitors - you need a bit of imagination to fill in the blanks. It's free, obviously, and there's no visitor centre or facilities, just open access to the site itself.
