Castle Wood

Castle Wood is a proper woodland walk on the outskirts of Leeds, the kind of place where you can actually escape the city without driving more than twenty minutes. It's a dense forest with decent trails threading through - nothing dramatic, but genuine enough to feel like proper countryside rather than a city park.

The woodland itself is unremarkable in the best possible way. Ancient oaks, decent undergrowth, the usual suspects. You're here for the walk, not Instagram moments. Allow a couple of hours if you're taking it slowly, less if you're just after a quick stomp. It works well for families - kids can scramble about, there's enough space that you're not tripping over other walkers, and the paths are manageable without needing specialist gear.

History buffs might find the name intriguing, though the castle itself has long gone. What remains is forest, which is honest enough. There's something rather nice about walking through land with a past.

If you're staying at one of the caravan parks in the area - Moor Lodge or Glenfield are both within striking distance - Castle Wood fills an afternoon gap without pretension. It's free, accessible, and does what a woodland should do. Don't expect drama or revelations. Do expect actual trees and actual quiet, which near Leeds is rather the point. Go on a weekday if you can.
