Castle Street Church : Dingwall [Church of Scotland]

The sandstone bulk of Castle Street Church dominates the town centre in Dingwall, hard to miss whether you're wandering down the main drag or parked up at the nearby campsite. Built in 1876, it's a proper Victorian kirk - all red stone and sturdy Presbyterian credentials - that tells you something about how seriously this Highland town took itself during the industrial boom.

Inside, it's all soaring timber ceilings and that particular smell of old wood and stone that churches do. The Victorian stained glass is decent, though you'll find more elaborate work elsewhere. What matters here is the building's relationship to Dingwall itself - it's woven into the fabric of the place, visible from half the streets around it.

Worth a quick stop if you're based at Dingwall Camping and Caravanning Club Site just down the road (five minutes' walk, basically). Family groups won't spend long inside - quarter of an hour is realistic unless you're keen on ecclesiastical architecture - but it provides a decent sense of Victorian Scotland and breaks up a rainy afternoon. The exterior photography is better than the interior visit, frankly. If you're staying at Highland Heights Luxury Glamping or Blackrock further out, it's worth combining with a proper walk around Dingwall's town centre and a visit to the modest museum rather than making it a solo trip. Free admission, naturally, and accessible during daylight hours.
