Castle Howe

Ancient earthworks rise from Kendal's centre like a grassy island in the urban landscape. Castle Howe isn't much to look at - just a circular mound topped with trees - but this 12th-century motte represents all that remains of Kendal Castle's original Norman stronghold. The view from the top takes in the River Kent and the town's limestone buildings, though you'll need to use your imagination to picture the wooden keep that once crowned this spot.

History enthusiasts will appreciate the significance, but families might find it a brief stop rather than a destination. The climb takes all of five minutes, and there's precious little interpretation on site. Still, it's free to explore and makes a decent leg-stretch if you're staying at nearby sites like Windermere Camping and Caravanning Club or the Kendal options. Kids can run about on the grass, and dog walkers frequent the area.

Combine it with Kendal's other castle ruins on the hillside above town for a proper historical tour, or use it as a quick detour before heading to the Lake District proper. The site's open access means you can visit anytime, though winter visits can be muddy underfoot.
