Castle Hill Wood

The woodland walk up Castle Hill starts gently enough, following a proper footpath lined with beech and oak. Once you're through the lower section, the slope gets real - nothing dangerous, but enough to remind your legs why you came here rather than staying in Tadcaster.

At the top, the reward is genuine: views that stretch across the Vale of York on a clear day. The hill itself has medieval earthworks, though they're subtle enough that you'll need to know what you're looking at to appreciate them. This isn't a dramatic castle ruin situation - it's more about the archaeology being written into the landscape.

Family groups with kids aged eight plus will manage it fine. Younger ones might struggle with the climb, and there's nowhere flat to really run about at the summit. Walkers will get forty minutes to an hour here comfortably, including the mooching about at the top. It's free and you can arrive whenever suits you.

Geographically, it works as a half-day outing while staying at Cawood Park - only six miles away. The woodland itself is absorbing enough in autumn when the canopy colours up, though winter can be muddy after rain. Summer is quieter than you'd expect, which suits most visitors. Worth the detour if you're in the area and like woodland walks with a bit of history attached, but it's not the kind of place you'd drive an hour out of your way for on its own.
