Castle Hill

The ramparts are still there if you know where to look. Castle Hill, just outside Holmfirth, is an Iron Age fort - the kind of place where you can actually feel the weight of centuries rather than just read about it on a plaque. The earthworks are substantial enough to make sense of, sprawling across the hilltop with defensive ditches you can still walk through. It's free to visit and you can wander the site at your own pace, which takes anything from twenty minutes to an hour depending on how much you want to poke about.

This one's for walkers and archaeology enthusiasts rather than anyone expecting visitor facilities or interpretation boards. The views across the Holme Valley are genuinely good - proper rolling Yorkshire moorland - but you'll need to be comfortable with unmaintained terrain and not minding if the site feels a bit raw and unmanicured. Kids might find it interesting for twenty minutes before asking why they can't see a shop, but older teenagers into history or the outdoors could spend a proper afternoon here.

If you're staying at one of the nearby caravan parks - Haighfield, Moor Lodge, or Glenfield are all within walking distance - this makes a natural addition to a morning on the hills. Combine it with a walk down into Holmfirth itself for lunch. The site demands a bit of legwork to appreciate properly, but that's rather the point. It's archaeology without the gift shop, which some will love and others will find a bit too serious.
