Castle Hill

Castle Hill rises abruptly from the Leicestershire landscape near Market Harborough, a genuine Iron Age hill fort that's been watching over this corner of the East Midlands for nearly 2,000 years. What you're looking at is a proper archaeological site - multiple defensive ditches and ramparts that once protected an ancient settlement, though there's no castle standing here now. The name's a bit misleading really.

Walking the earthworks takes about forty minutes, and the views across the countryside are genuinely excellent. You can make out the defensive strategy - the way the ditches were dug to control access, the positioning of the ramparts. It's not flashy, but it rewards close attention if you're into that sort of thing. History enthusiasts will find plenty to contemplate; casual walkers might feel it's a bit bare after the initial scramble up.

The site is free and accessible, though it's worth checking conditions after heavy rain as the slopes can get muddy. Go mid-morning or late afternoon to dodge the worst of the crowds, though it's never properly busy.
