Castle Green

Castle Green is a modest nature reserve on the outskirts of Hereford where the River Wye loops around a pocket of grassland and woodland. It's the sort of place locals know well but visitors often miss - no visitor centre, no fanfare, just a riverside walk that does exactly what it promises without trying too hard.

You'll find open meadows that flood seasonally, patches of native woodland, and decent views across the water. The main appeal is straightforward: a couple of hours wandering the riverside path, spotting whatever birds and insects are about depending on the season. Spring brings plenty of activity; autumn is quieter but pleasant. It works well if you want a gentle leg-stretch rather than a proper hike.

The reserve suits families with young kids - it's flat, unthreatening, and you can turn back whenever you fancy. Birdwatchers will find it worthwhile in migration season. Photographers might visit if light is good, but don't expect drama. The real value comes from combining it with time in Hereford itself - the cathedral, the riverside walks through town - rather than making a special journey here alone.

Parking is basic. Opening hours and fees are best checked locally, as facilities remain minimal. If you're staying at Ridge Hill or Broadmeadow Glamping just down the road, it's an obvious afternoon option. Otherwise, it's a nice addition to a broader Hereford visit rather than a reason to come.
