Castle Field

The wetland here is genuinely absorbing - shallow pools and reed beds that draw serious birdwatchers and the casually curious in equal measure. Castle Field sits just outside Ellesmere, a proper little market town in Shropshire, and it's the sort of reserve where you can spend forty minutes or three hours depending on how many warblers you spot.

What you get is mostly walking. There are paths threading through the reserve, nothing too demanding, and in spring and summer the place comes alive with breeding birds. You'll see reed warblers, water rails if you're lucky, and the usual suspects - mallards, coots, herons. Winter brings visiting ducks from further north. The viewing platforms are straightforward affairs, no fancy hides, just spots where you can pause and watch without tramping through the wetland itself.

This works best for families with kids old enough to enjoy genuine wildlife watching rather than screaming at ducks. Serious ornithologists will rate it. Casual walkers might find it a bit limited - it's not a big sprawling country estate, more a focused wetland site.

Staying nearby, you've got excellent glamping at Archers' Meadow just 1.3 miles away, or several solid caravan parks - Colemere is barely two miles off. The reserves and lakes around Ellesmere are genuinely good for a holiday base. Castle Field slots in nicely as a morning walk before heading to the town for lunch. Admission details aren't widely advertised, so ring ahead or check locally in Ellesmere itself.
