Castle Dow, HIllfort

The walk up to Castle Dow catches most people off guard. You're expecting a ruin, maybe some crumbling walls, but what you find instead is this vast earthwork - a proper Iron Age hillfort that commands the landscape around Pitlochry like it's been keeping watch for two thousand years. The fort itself sits on a steep hilltop, and the views across Perthshire are genuinely impressive, especially on a clear day when you can see for miles.

It's free to visit and you can turn up whenever you like. The walk takes about thirty minutes from the nearest parking, though it's a bit of a slog uphill on the return journey. The earthworks are substantial - multiple ramparts and ditches that still define the perimeter - which makes you realise how seriously the Iron Age folk took their defences. History enthusiasts will find it genuinely interesting; families with younger kids might find the actual remains a bit underwhelming compared to a proper castle, though the walk and the views make up for it.

Don't expect facilities or interpretation boards. This is archaeology in the raw. If you're staying at one of the nearby caravan parks - Grandtully Station is closest at just over a mile away - it's worth combining Castle Dow with time at Faskally Woods Holiday Park or a wander around Pitlochry itself. The effort to get up there is real, but the fact it's completely free and genuinely quiet makes it feel like proper exploring rather than ticking off a tourist spot.
