Castle Dow

Castle Dow is a modest hilltop ruin that commands views across the Tummel Valley near Pitlochry. The walk itself is the real draw here - a straightforward climb through woodland that takes the better part of an hour, emerging onto open moorland where you can make out the remains of what was once a fortified stronghold.

The ruins aren't particularly impressive, truth be told. You're looking at low stone foundations and the vaguest hint of where walls once stood. But that's rather beside the point. The appeal is the walk and the panorama when you reach the top - on a clear day you can see far across Perthshire, which makes the leg work feel worthwhile.

This suits walkers far more than casual visitors. Kids might manage it fine if they're decent on their feet, but don't expect them to be gripped by the destination itself. The real interest lies in the landscape and the sense of isolation once you're up there. Allow a couple of hours for the round trip, including time to potter about at the summit.

It's free access, no visitor facilities to speak of. Go midweek if you want peace and quiet. The area around Pitlochry is geared up for holiday stays - several caravan parks within five miles including Milton Of Fonab and Aberfeldy, both workable bases if you're planning a walking break in the region. Castle Dow works well as part of a longer hiking itinerary rather than a standalone attraction.
